SAVE BRIDGE 2062

National Highways is planning to permanently infill the space beneath Bridge 2062 at Braughing station – one of the last surviving structural elements of the former Buntingford branch line.

The bridge carries the B1368 over the site of the former station and, together with the surviving station buildings, platforms, goods shed, platelayers' hut and signal box, forms a remarkable and largely intact group of historic railway assets. Filling the void beneath the bridge deck with concrete would permanently destroy that character – and cannot be undone.

    Why this matters

The Buntingford branch line closed in 1964 and has been largely erased from the landscape. What survives at Braughing station is among the most complete reminders of the line's existence. The open space beneath Bridge 2062 is central to that – it frames a view of the station from the public footpath to the south, and maintains the visual and physical relationship between the bridge and the historic site it adjoins.

The Buntingford Railway & Local History Society, supported by The HRE Group – a national coalition of engineers and heritage campaigners – is opposing National Highways' preferred infilling option and calling for a proportionate repair solution to be properly developed and costed before any irreversible works are permitted.
